As the year draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the milestones of 2024 and look forward to 2025.
This year, we’ve continued to transform sustainable fisheries management with our flexible catch reporting software. By equipping fisheries with tools and guidance, we’re enabling them to make data-driven decisions that benefit their businesses, the fishing industry, and marine ecosystems alike.
2024 Highlights
DFO ELOG Mandates for 2025: The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced new mandates for electronic logbooks (ELOGs) in select fisheries:
“It will be mandatory to use electronic logbooks (ELOGs) in select fisheries in DFO’s Gulf and Quebec regions as of January 1, 2025. Mandatory ELOGs will also be rolled out in select fisheries in the Maritimes Region and Newfoundland and Labrador in the spring, 2025.”
Canada’s Leading ELOG Provider: We remain qualified for more ELOGS than any other Canadian provider. We currently offer ELOGS for:
- Lobster
- Crab
- Whelk, Bivalve Mollusks, Squid
- Groundfish (Redfish, Cod, Turbot, and Halibut)
- Small Pelagics (Mackerel, Herring, Alewife, Capelin, and Smelt)
- Salmon
We’ll soon be adding Shrimp to our certifications. By the time all Canadian fisheries transition to mandatory ELOGs, we’ll be qualified across the board.
Working in South America: This year, we initiated a pilot project in Brazil, supporting catch reporting for pelagic fisheries. Collaborating closely with South American fishermen and harvesters has been invaluable, deepening our understanding of fisheries in the region and demonstrating the versatility of our platform.
Reflections from Our Leadership Team
We asked key members of our leadership team to share their thoughts on 2024 and their vision for 2025:
Dr. Dalal Al-Abdulrazzak, VP of Business Development & Chief Science Officer
Highlights from 2024: The DFO ELOG mandates and our work in Brazil.
Looking forward to: Hosting over 60 in-person ELOG training sessions starting in January, attending the 12th annual Economist World Ocean Summit & Expo in Japan, and expanding our partnerships with First Nations on the East Coast.
Cameron Smith, VP Development
Highlights from 2024: Driving new ELOG qualifications and launching an improved user interface that enhanced onboarding, streamlined data entry with advanced autofill, and introduced a more robust alert center.
Looking forward to: Gathering user feedback in 2025 to make our software even more user-friendly, as well as collaborating with harvesters to refine the platform as ELOG mandates expand.
Julian Hawkins, CEO
Highlights from 2024: The announcement of the DFO ELOG mandates and significant updates to our platform with the Canadian Groundfish Research and Conservation Society (CGRCS) to better manage Chinook bycatch, ensuring the groundfish trawl fleet could continue operations.
Looking forward to: Supporting Canadian fishermen as they transition to ELOGs, continuing our work in Brazil, and enabling the seafood supply chain to meet FSMA 204 and export requirements with reliable data.
